Where Is Diamante Valley?

Diamante Valley is a region located in the Southern Zone of Costa Rica, home to  lush rainforests and incredible flora and fauna. The Southern Zone is a quieter region in Costa Rica, away from the crowded beaches and tourist hotspots.

The region is famous for the Diamante Verde, a set of 10 majestic waterfalls nestled deep in the Costa Rican rainforests. The closest human settlement is the village of Las Tumbas, around 35 minutes away from the nearest town of Dominical.

Dominical is a popular beach town a few hours away from the capital of Costa Rica, San Jose. Diamante Valley is a secluded sanctuary that offers a stark contrast to the bustling beach towns of Manuel Antonio and Costa Ballena.

Surrounded by lush, rolling mountains cloaked in verdant foliage, the landscape is teeming with natural beauty and untouched wilderness. While the journey to reach Diamante Valley may require a bit of effort, the pristine landscapes and awe-inspiring Diamante falls makes it well worth the adventure.

Why Visit Diamante Waterfalls?

Diamante Valley is home to the Diamante Verde or “Green Diamond,” a series of ten waterfalls hidden deep within the jungles of Costa Rica. Each waterfall within the Green Diamond offers its own unique charm, from tranquil pools perfect for swimming to towering falls with breathtaking vistas.

However, the crowning jewel of Diamante Valley is the majestic twin Diamante falls, standing at an impressive 85 feet (ca. 26 m) tall. It is the tallest waterfall in Costa Rica. Nestled behind the falls is the Casa de Piedra (House of Stone) – a massive cavern large enough to house around 40 people.

You can sleep in the caves if you choose the overnight hike option. The cavern has dozens of sleeping pads, two flushing toilets, showers, and even a kitchen where the guides will cook your food using fresh produce harvested from a vibrant organic garden on the property!

Apart from its scenic vistas, the waterfalls also have swimming holes, rappelling, and cliff jumping opportunities for those who like adventure. The hike to the falls is in itself an adventure not for the faint of heart – the strenuous hike takes 2-hours and will take you to an altitude of 2624 feet (800 meters). Don’t forget to bring your hiking boots.

Exotic Local Flora and Fauna

As you hike the winding trails of Diamante Valley, you will get a chance to encounter the rich biodiversity that thrives within Costa Rica’s pristine rainforests. In the trees, you will see Great Green Macaws, Scarlet Macaws, Toucans, Hummingbirds, and of course, plenty of monkeys.

The land is also home to some vibrant plant life, including sweet bananas and sugarcane, spices like cinnamon and vanilla, and fruits unique to Costa Rica like the water apple, Starfruit, Mamons, Zapote, and plenty of citrus. Visitors can also marvel at the vibrant blooms of exotic flowers like the beehive ginger, which adds a splash of color to the verdant landscape.

Guided Tours in Diamante Valley

While exploring Diamante Valley independently may seem like an enticing proposition, it may not be practical for many people. A key reason is the status of the waterfalls – like many scenic regions in Costa Rica, the Diamante waterfalls are not located on public lands. Instead, a family privately owns the area.

If you want to visit the waterfalls during your pacific journeys, you have to rely on guided tours approved by the owners. Besides, there are myriad other benefits from relying on local guides that can enhance your overall experience.

When you are led by knowledgeable locals like the ones provided by Vajra Jahra, guided tours provide invaluable insights into Costa Rica’s flora, fauna, and cultural heritage. Their expertise allows you to navigate the rugged terrain with ease, ensuring a safe and memorable journey.

Moreover, guided life tours offer the opportunity to learn about the conservation efforts in Costa Rica aimed at preserving Diamante Valley’s natural beauty for future generations to enjoy.

Forest River And Sun Rays Shining Through Trees

Activities You Can Enjoy with Vajra Jahra in Diamante Valley

The Vajra Jahra Retreat Center is strategically located in the Diamante Valley, close to the waterfalls in the heart of the rainforest. When you visit us, you can truly immerse yourself in everything the region has to offer, at your own relaxed pace.

Apart from the marquee visits to the Diamante Waterfall and the surrounding forest, we offer a variety of other exhilarating tours and activities that come highly recommended from our guests:

White Water Rafting

The Savegre River near Dominical has multiple sections that are ideal for rafting adventures. Certain sections of the river have been graded Class II and Class III rapids. At Vajra Jahra, we can arrange white water rafting trips led by certified guides for a safe experience. As part of your great tour, you may also experience the swimming hole adventures.

Isla del Cano (Cano Island) is a biological reserve located 12 miles (ca. 19 km) offshore in the Pacific Ocean, near the Osa Peninsula. Rich in coral reefs, the transparent waters around the island are considered among the best in Costa Rica for snorkeling. We can arrange snorkeling trips to Cano Island via Uvita, which is a short ride away from Dominical.

Zip Lining

Zip lining through the lush canopy provides a bird’s-eye view of the rainforests around Diamante Valley. There are numerous canopy platforms around Dominical that offer exhilarating zip line rides over the trees. We can arrange these canopy tours with local family guides for eligible guests. No children under the age of 10 are allowed.

Wildlife Hikes

Wildlife hikes offer our guests the chance to encounter Diamante Valley’s diverse inhabitants up close. There are numerous promising trails around the Vajra Jahra resort that you can take to get a closer look at lizards, coatis, vibrant tree frogs, toucans, hummingbirds, and a host of other animals and birds native to Costa Rica.

Tips for Wildlife Photography Enthusiasts

Although Costa Rica is a prime destination for wildlife photography enthusiasts, the forests here also present some unique challenges. For starters, the climate is humid with frequent heavy rains. You may have to go on long hikes to find the animals. And the most interesting ones are located up in the trees.

To handle these issues, we suggest the following tips:

  •  Try to bring gear to protect yourself and your equipment from the rains.
  •  Include plenty of lint-free fabric to dry your lenses.
  •  Consider bringing lightweight monopod mounts or gimbals for long hikes.
  •  Improve your upper body strength (to hold heavy cameras pointed towards the trees).
